KOKUSAI ELECTRIC CORPORATION (President and CEO: Fumiyuki Kanai, Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan) is pleased to announce that we have submitted a commitment letter to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)*1, an international partnership that validates Science Based Targets (SBTs) *2 to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals. To join the SBTi’s climate campaign, a company submits a letter to commit to setting medium-term GHG reduction targets and submitting its targets to the SBTi within two years.
The KOKUSAI ELECTRIC Group has set the “creation of a sustainable society and the conservation of the global environment” as a materiality (important) issue and “reduction of environmental burden” as a priority subject. One of the items of these activities is the “reduction of GHG emissions,” and we have been working to achieve our GHG emission reduction target of limiting temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
In addition to the existing electricity- and energy-saving efforts to reduce energy consumption in the manufacturing process, our group has promoted the use of renewable energy by installing a solar power generation system at Toyama Technology & Manufacturing Center in April 2022. A larger-scale solar power generation system will also be introduced at Tonami Center (provisional name), which will start operation in Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture in next autumn. We are determined to further increase efforts to tackle climate change.
Based on our corporate slogan “Technology & Tai-wa for Tomorrow,” we will continue to pursue economic value and environmental and social values from both business and ESG initiatives (resolution of environmental and social issues and strengthening of governance) perspectives, thereby contributing to the achievement of the SDGs as well as achieving both a sustainable society and sustainable growth of our Group.
